Fall Wine Tasting Begins at Powhatan's Festival of the Grape

The Start of Virginia Wine Month

Emma Holman

October is an exciting month for Virginia wineries. Winemakers are busy assessing their harvest as the last fruits are plucked from the vine, the statewide celebration of  Virginia Wine Month begins, and the last of the seasons wine festivals are being held.

If you’re lucky enough to live in central Virginia, attending one of these festivals is an easy drive away. On Saturday, Oct. 5, the Powhatan Chamber of Commerce will host its 17th Annual Powhatan's Festival of the Grape 2019 at the Historic Courthouse Village in Powhatan, VA. Patrons can enjoy food, shopping, live music, wine, and other spirits.

Every tasting ticket gives visitors access to a variety of Virginia wines from over 23 different wineries such as Barboursville, Default Vineyards, and Mattaponi. Patrons can enjoy sipping and savoring their favorite wines while enjoying the beauty of Fall day in Virginia.

They will also get to enjoy samplings from several Virginia craft breweries and distilleries including Catoctin Creek, Chesapeake Bay Distillery and Vitae Spirits.

No Fall festival would be complete without hard cider, a beverage with roots dating back to Colonial Virginia. This year’s festival includes hard ciders from several major players in the hard cider revival. Exhibitors include Bryant Cider, Cobbler Mountain, and Courthouse Creek Cider.

And of course, there will be a variety of food options. Vendors such as Dank Eats, JiJi’s Frozen Custard, River City Woodfire, Sherry’s Crabcake, and Smokin’ Pigs will provide a vast array of the sweet or savory for every palate.

Get an early start on holiday shopping while strolling through the arts and crafts vendor fair. More than 60 exhibitors will showcase everything from paintings, pottery, and jewelry, to soaps, kettle corn, and specialty jerky.

Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the gate for adults 21+ and cover admission and all tastings for the festival. Tickets for youth, 13-20 are $15 or $20 at the gate. To Buy Tickets  and a complete list of vendors and wineries, go to https://www.powhatanwinefestival.com . Tickets can also be purchased at local C&F Bank locations..

The event averages 8,000 guests per year and is successful thanks to the work of 1,225 volunteers. Each year, proceeds from the festival allow the Chamber to donate $10,000 to community donations.
