Award winning Hybrid Grape

Arandell- This is a very unique Wine. We were one of the first producers of this grape developed by Cornell University to be the most disease resistance grape out there. With us in an Organic program, it was very important to be sure we had a grape that needed little or no spraying. With our hearts into sustainable agriculture this was our first choice. So, we purchased 750 of these plants in 2013 making us one of the oldest commercial vineyards that grow this grape. It's been fun to stump the wine expert, as in a blind testing they never get it. LOL That is not the only reason that make this grape special, it's it's ability to be Virginia red with soft tannins. It ripens early, bud breaks late and can set the stage for wonderful grapes to go to your winemaker. Grapes that have fully ripened and met the chemical structure to make excellent wines. Arandell 2017 was put before a tasting group in Isreall to determine what grapes would be grown there......Arandell 2017 made that cut. We were so excited to be a part of that. We are not stopping there of course....this wine was sent to England for review to be included in a book that covers all grape varietals around the world. We have posted her review below. The growing year was fantastic and produced a wonderful wine. It was bottled July 8th, 2020. This wine will not disappoint and I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how nice a hybrid grape grown in VA can be. After all, we have yet to determine all the wonderful grapes that could be called VIRGINIAN. This wine just won a Silver Medal in the California Sommelier Challenge 2020 Review by Julia Harding/Janice Robinson (World Renowned Wine Critics) "Very dark cherry red. Attractive aroma of tangy dark-red fruits with a nice layer rather like stone dust. Smells fresh and lightly peppery with a touch of capsicum. Not unlike Cabernet Franc. Lively and fresh. Plenty of the juicy dark-red fruit on the palate ad very well balanced It is all about the fruit, the oak not really showing here except perhaps in the way it has rounded the tannins. Tannins are smooth but definite. Lively, pure and vibrant, with a long cherry-fruited finish but without the sweetness of cherry. Extremely impressive for a new, disease-resistant hybrid. Bravo! Paul and Loretta Briedé of Winchester, Virginia, purchased the land in 2002 and established the Briedé Family Vineyards in 2013. The years before the vineyard was established, the fields around the main house were used for Loretta's hunter horses. They love great wine and now had the means to persue a new adventure. They envisioned creating a vineyard using sustainable practices to grow healthy, grapes that showcase the beauty of Virginia. For five years the vineyard was 100% certified organic (one of only two in the state at that time). We quickly learned that Virginia was a very difficult area to continue to be organic due to the high humidity in the mid-atlantic region and the disease pressure that created. In 2019 we dropped our certification to be able to maintain healthy grapes and quality wine as we started to expand our crop. We still make our wine the cleanest way possible and let the wine express itself the way it was intended.

Our tasting room opened in 2018, which was our former horse barn, where we offer our estate wines, as well as French Champagnes and sparkling wines. Our wines have always been our highest priority. Sparkling Winchester won a silver medal in the Governor's Cup 2020 (our first entry) We specialize in Hybrid grapes so you will experience some new flavors you may not have ever had. We can raise grapes that have less disease, less chemicals and can ripen within Virginia weather growing parameters. That to us equates to better grapes that we can deliver to our wine maker. We believe better grapes, some new flavors, sustaninable vineyard practices, leaving the wine as "clean" as possible will ultimately give you the best experience possible. Don't forget to ask for the wine "Arandell" It won a Silver medal at the 2020 International Sommelier Challenge in San Diego, California.

We are proud to be part of the Shenandoah Spirit Trail, Shenandoah Valley Wine Trail and Virginia Wine Pass.
