Art @ The Vineyard with Richard Young
Revalation Vineyards Exhibiting Oil Paintings by Richard Young September - October 2022
Inside the tasting room at Revalation Vineyards, visitors are treated to bucolic pictures of the Hebron Valley property which hang next to the stone fireplace and behind the bar. Often mistaken for photographs, these pieces are intricately detailed oil paintings, created by Madison artist, Richard Young.
Born in Asheville, NC and raised in West Virginia, Young’s first career was as a school art teacher, with his final position at Madison High School before retiring 15 years ago. He is now enjoying his second career as a painter, choosing landscapes as the subject for his art.
Inspired by the beauty of the natural world, Young who is an avid runner, takes the time outside to find more inspiration for new paintings. He explains, “I feel blessed to be able to do the paintings. While I’m running, I’m absorbing the beauty in front of me and then I translate it for others to enjoy.”
Young practices plein air painting and also works from photographs at his home. He will take photos of a particular place from several vantages, during different times of the day to capture changes in the light and weather. He has created hundreds of oil paintings while seated at his kitchen table and works with small, pointed craft brushes that allow his attention to details. “Oil paints are slow drying and provide me with time to work, blend, and detail the painting. The most important thing is to get the details right. Those are the key things,” says Young. His work will be on display and for sale in the tasting room until the end of October.
