Capstone Vineyards

a taste of terrior

Welcome to Capstone Vineyards, where passion, tradition, and Virginia’s rich winemaking heritage come together to create an unforgettable wine experience. Nestled in the breathtaking foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, just a stone’s throw from Jim Law’s renowned Linden Vineyards, Capstone invites you to savor the beauty and bounty of this incredible region.

We’ve been cultivating these rolling hills since 2003 when founders Matt and Theresa Payne turned their dream into reality by planting the first vines. Their hard work, dedication, and love for the land led to the creation of some of the finest wines Virginia has to offer. Today, under the stewardship of winemaker Theo Smith and his partners, Douglas McCarthy and Matthew Akers, we are excited to continue this legacy of excellence, inviting you to experience our wines and the story behind them firsthand.

Join us for a wine-tasting adventure where you’ll discover the exceptional varietals that have made Capstone a standout in Virginia’s thriving wine industry. From our robust Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot to the elegant Viognier and Chardonnay, our wines are a reflection of the unique terroir that defines this region, a factor that sets our wines apart. Each sip tells the story of the land, the people, and the meticulous craftsmanship that goes into every bottle.

Under Theo’s expert leadership, we’re continuing to elevate our wine offerings. Theo brings over 15 years of experience to Capstone, having worked harvests in France, Canada, and the U.S., before settling in Virginia in 2011. This vineyard, for Theo, is more than just a winery—it’s his “capstone,” a crowning achievement that allows him to perfect his craft in the place he now calls home. His expertise, combined with the agricultural roots and wine enthusiasm of Douglas and Matthew, means you’re in for a truly special experience with every visit.

We invite you to come visit us in Linden, Virginia, and immerse yourself in the world of Capstone. Our wine tastings offer the perfect opportunity to sample our range of wines while taking in the stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Whether you’re new to Virginia wine or a seasoned aficionado, our friendly and knowledgeable staff will guide you through the tasting, sharing the stories behind each wine and the journey that brought it to your glass, ensuring a personalized and memorable experience.

At Capstone Vineyards, we believe in creating an experience that’s about more than just wine—it’s about connection. Whether you’re here for a quiet afternoon of tasting or joining us for one of our seasonal events, we look forward to welcoming you into our world. Explore the vineyard, meet the winemakers, and enjoy the relaxed, inviting atmosphere that has made Capstone a favorite destination for wine lovers from near and far.

Plan your visit today, and let us share with you the fruits of our labor, the spirit of our family, and the taste of Virginia at its finest. We can’t wait to raise a glass with you at Capstone Vineyards, where every bottle is a tribute to the land, the craft, and the tradition of winemaking in the heart of Virginia.
