Press Release: DuCard Vineyards releases a new sparkling wine called Dorothy’s Slippers
DuCard Vineyards is excited to announce a newly released wine that is four years in the making that will certainly bring an extra layer of cheer to your holidays! Introducing 2020 Dorothy’s Slippers Sparkling Norton Rose!
Dorothy’s Slippers Sparkling Rose is made from Norton grapes grown, harvested, and fermented from the DuCard vineyard by the innovative, winemaking wizard, Julien Durante.
The owner Scott Elliff says, “It’s a sparkling Norton Rose, which is very unusual, given that Norton is a deep dark, aromatic wine with relatively high acidity that we have learned to tame. Not what you’d think would work for a rose.” Made in the traditional, old-school Method Champenoise with grapes from the 2020 harvest allows for over three years of bottle aging that provides a softer rounder flavor development, tiny bubbles, and elegant mouthfeel. The composition of the wine is 70% Norton and 30% Viognier, both from the DuCard estate vineyard.
While discussing the potential color of the wine at the onset of the project, it was mentioned that the color would be a rich rose, even a ruby color and the idea of Dorothy’s ruby slippers from the famous L. Frank Baum book and movie The Wizard of Oz was born. For the label, the ideas swirled around like a tornado and landed on a confident woman with a 1930’s flair as an homage to Dorothy with a DuCard tattoo sipping wine from a black slipper as a historical reference to show respect for an artist’s creativity. The tag line for the wine came as an easy decision, “There’s no place like DuCard.”
